With 8 years of motorsport history in India, Volkswagen Motorsport is one of the leading motorsport leagues in the country. Professional race car drivers from around the country have put their skills to the test by participating in an attempt to win the title.  

Here is a brief journey so far.

2017

Volkswagen Motorsport India has always brought new technology to Indian Motorsport. Yet, 2017 saw the benchmark rise sharply with the Race Ameo Cup car. An amalgamation of the stock Volkswagen GTI with the stock Ameo with a raft of race spec equipment gave rise to the Race Ameo.

With 205 PS of power and electronics which are at par with any race series abroad the Ameo Cup is a beast.

2016

Always a milestone event in our calendars, Volkswagen Motorsport’s journey in India has evolved over the years as we shifted to MRF to be our partners and suppliers for our racing tyres.

This unification has helped us refine our technology and car setup ensuring we racked up faster lap times as compared to the previous year.

2015

The Polo R passes on the baton to the Volkswagen Race Vento

With raft of changes from Polo to a Vento, the car was built with a more rigid chassis enabling the drivers to push harder yet not be punished too much for their mistakes. The car offered the perfect setup for a racing enthusiast to learn the tricks of the trade at a fast pace.

2014

Supported 2 drivers from 2013 season in international racing championships: Volkswagen Scirocco Cup, Germany and Volkswagen Castrol Golf Cup, Poland

Vento Dealers Cup becomes an integral part of the Volkswagen Polo R Cup

Seasons

When India witnessed the first of its kind Polo R Cup street race

The first season of the Polo Cup in India commenced with an inaugural round at Shri Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex at Balewadi in Pune on May 30, 2010. Presence of Bollywood celebrities, such as, actress Gul Panag and filmmaker Prakash Jha added to the glamour of the event. One of the highlights of this round was an all-women race where Gul Panag also participated. Ace rally driver, Nawaz Sandhu thrilled spectators by winning the Special Polo Cup race for women.

The Year of repeating success and resetting records

After an exciting inaugural season, Volkswagen continued the momentum with season 2 of the series. The season began with an intensive, three-day fitness camp in the picturesque hill station of Lonavala. Through the season, Polo R Cup drivers also got opportunities to race on international circuits. Two young drivers participated in an exchange program in Polo R Cup China and then got a chance to race in the thrilling night race format in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

When our race machine underwent a heart change; from TDI to TSI engines

The third instalment of Polo R Cup India witnessed a major change under the hood. The diesel TDI, 1.6-litre engine was replaced by the new petrol TSI, 1.4-litre. The 2012 season of Volkswagen Polo R Cup kicked off with the drivers’ selection in April 2012 in Coimbatore followed by the launch of the brand new Race Polo 2012 on May 17, 2012 in New Delhi.

Like 2011, Coimbatore hosted the inaugural race of the Polo R Cup 2012 which was flagged-off at the Kari Motor Speedway on July 08, 2012. The Grand Finale of 2012 season was flagged off on India’s F1 track, Buddh International Circuit.

The Year of proving their mettle

The fourth season saw Volkswagen Motorsport India progressing leaps and bounds in not just circuit racing, but also in the rally world with the Customer Sport Initiative. The Volkswagen Polo R Cup season 2013 started on a promising note with 12 new drivers joining the brigade after a rigorous driver selection. Jeffrey Kruger, Volkswagen Polo Cup driver from South Africa was the only international driver for the season.

The Year of surprises

The season started with driver selection at the Kari Motor Speedway in the month of March, entertained thousands in Coimbatore and Greater Noida and set new standards with a record presence of spectators at a motorsport event in the country.

Volkswagen Motorsport India’s Customer Sport Initiative had another successful year with an increase in the number of Volkswagen Polo rally cars in the Indian Rally Championship.

Sheer Dominance with new tyres

2016 marked a milestone in Volkswagen Motorsport’s journey as we shifted to MRF as our partners and suppliers for our racing tires. With the MRF base in Chennai, Volkswagen Motorsport India revisited Madras Motor race Track after a gap of three years. With the additional track in the calendar there were quite a few surprises even for the seasoned drivers.
