November 2006MOU between Volkswagen and the Government of Maharashtra
April – December 2007Work on the construction of the plant starts with levelling, and by December 2007, the Paint shop, Body shop, Assembly & Logistic departments are constructed.
February – October 2008The equipment arrives for all the departments that have been constructed through the better part of 2008. Testing on these equipments is an ongoing process throughout this period.
November 2008First trial run of Body shop and Assembly. This month marks the 1st ready car to be manufactured at this state-of-the-art facility.
January 2009First trial run of Paint shop where the 1st painted body of the car is produced.
March 2009Plant Inauguration by His Excellency Shri S. C. Jamir, Hon’ble Governor of Maharashtra in the presence of the Prof. Dr. Jochem Heizmann, Member of Board of Volkswagen AG with responsibility of ‘Group Production’ and Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Brand, with responsibility for ‘Development’. For Volkswagen, the new production facility in Pune is a major stepping stone towards achieving its ambitious growth targets on the Indian subcontinent. The facility has a maximum annual production capacity of 110,000 vehicles a year
April 2009Volkswagen India started the pre-series production of its most anticipated mid-segment model, the new Polo at its Pune plant.
November 2009A state-of-the art Communication Centre designed in-line with Volkswagen Group’s international facilities inaugurated in the Plant premises. The Centre spread over an area of 7000 sq.mt. houses amongst other departments, the Director’s office, Human Resource, Finance, Planning, IT, Procurement and Communication teams.
December 2009Start of production of Volkswagen India’s first made-in-India car- the Polo from its plant in Chakan, Pune in the presence of Hon’ble Maharashtra CM, Shri Ashok Chavan and Prof. Dr. Jochem Heizmann, Member of Board of Volkswagen AG with responsibility of ‘Group Production’. The fifth-generation Volkswagen Polo is one of the best selling cars in the world and has been immensely popular in Europe.
February 2010Visit of the German President, Prof. Dr. Horst Koehler to the Plant on his first state visit to India. He was given a warm welcome by Prof. Dr. Jochem Heizmann, Member of Board of Volkswagen AG with responsibility of ‘Group Production’ and Mr. Joerg Mueller, Volkswagen Group Chief Representative India and President & Managing Director Volkswagen India Private Limited. President Koehler rolled-out the 11,111,111th globally produced Polo from the plant to mark the occasion. The Polo has been in production since 1975 and will be launched in the Indian market in its fifth generation version.
February 2010The Lower Saxony Parliament Delegation, Germany warmly welcomed by Mr. Joerg Mueller, Volkswagen Group Chief Representative India and President & Managing Director Volkswagen India Private Limited and Dr. John Chacko, Technical Managing Director, Volkswagen India Private Limited at the Volkswagen India Chakan plant near Pune.
