Conventional paints contain organic solvents that are harmful to the environment. They enter the air during application and drying, which then has to be purified at great effort and cost. In recent years it has been possible to develop high-quality paints in which water largely takes the place of solvents. The solvent content of the filler and basecoat paints used at Volkswagen, for example, has been reduced by more than 85 percent. In addition, the paint shops at Volkswagen increasingly use economical, fully automatic paint application techniques. Processing these paints requires a high level of professionalism, precisely controlled climatic conditions and the most stringent standards of cleanliness in the paint shop.
