On the 4MOTION permanent four-wheel drive system, the Haldex coupling enables the propulsive power to be distributed variably between the front and rear wheels. It also ensures the effectiveness of electronic systems such as the anti-lock braking system, traction control or electronic differential lock. Additional information is taken into account in this regulatory function via a computer. The computer control system has the function of balancing not just traction and the resulting differences in speed between the wheels, but also further variables such as handling conditions and drive torque. This enables interaction with the anti-lock braking system/traction control or the electronic differential lock to be enhanced and the distribution of propulsive power is improved with regard to directional stability and safety. The computer refers to the information provided by the wheel speed sensors and engine management. With this data, the computer has all key information and can therefore react optimally to the situation in hand.
