An engine’s performance is decisively influenced by how much fuel can be effectively combusted in the cylinder. A direct gauge of this performance is the volume of air that can reach the cylinders. In this context, five-valve technology offers crucial advantages: engines with five valves per cylinder can be supplied with air better and more quickly. Torque and power output are consequently boosted. Fuel consumption and emission levels are also improved. Volkswagen was one of the first car manufacturers to mass-produce engines with five valves per cylinder. This involves great experience in casting technology for cylinder heads and extremely space-saving valve control design.
