ACC is based on the ordinary cruise control system. The speed selected by the driver is reduced to that of the vehicle ahead, if the vehicle ahead is moving more slowly. This is effected by automatic application of the brakes and intervention to control the vehicle's acceleration.
By selecting different time gaps, the driver can adjust the distance maintained by the "Front Assist" function. Apart from its function in intelligent cruise control, the radar system also detects situations where the distance to the vehicle in front is critical and helps to reduce the vehicle's stopping distance when required.
